The persona

Persona and SCA work

Otto’s persona is a German bard and swordsman who travels with a Landsknecht caravan. The character joins the visual culture and martial life of the sixteenth-century Landsknechte with Otto’s work in bardic arts, light-weapon fighting, heraldry, and historical clothing.

His official West Kingdom profile records his introduction to the SCA in 2009 in the Barony of the Far West. Arts and Sciences became an early focus, both through making work and encouraging others to take part. He was selected twice as a Queen’s Artisan and later recognized with the Order of the Rose Leaf, the Western Lily, and other kingdom and baronial honors.

This page brings together Otto’s official records without replacing them. Each award, reign, armorial registration, and archive photograph links back to its source.

Registered name and device

Otto Spilman

Per pale Or and sable, a chess rook counterchanged, on a chief embattled gules a harp between two stringless hunting horns reversed Or.

The name and device were accepted in the July 2010 SCA Letter of Acceptances and Returns. The Laurel record also cautions that the winged-mermaid form of the Irish harp is post-period; that note is retained here so later artwork can follow the registered description accurately.

Submission evidence

Resources used to register the name and device

The March 2010 West Kingdom Letter of Intent records the following documentation. The period-name sources support the submitted name; the paired device record preserves the submitted artwork and the changes made to its blazon.

Sara L. Uckelman, known in the SCA as Aryanhwy merch Catmael. Five Otto entries dated 1480, 1481, 1483, 1484, and 1492.

  • SpilmanEtymologisches Wörterbuch der deutschen Familiennamen

Josef Karlmann Brechenmacher, under the heading Spelmann. The cited entry gives Faru Kath. Spelemans in 1470.

  • SpilmanAmt Waldenburg, Pfarrei Schönholthausen

Local-history PDF cited in the submission. Multiple spellings appear under Spielmann. Its footnotes point to records described as dating from 1584, including Herzogtum Westfalen, Landstände IV 1 and 1a; Archiv Hovestadt, Akten 1584; Pfarrarchiv Schönholthausen, Register; and Depositum von Plettenberg, Urk. 1209.

  • SpilmanAdditional dated citations

Regesta Imperii, the Berner Chronik edition, and the Universität Freiburg archive inventory A001. Bürger Ludwig Spilman (1499); Erzählung von Gilgen Spilman (apparently 1455, as qualified in the submission); and Ludwig Spilman zu Bettberg (1526).

Several original 2010 web addresses are no longer live. Their titles, dated forms, and archive references are retained here from the official OSCAR submission record.

Device documentation

The paired OSCAR device item preserves the color and black-and-white emblazons and records the submitted wording as “Per pale Or and sable, a Chessman rook counterchanged Overall on a chief embattled Gules, a Winged Mermaid Harp Or between two hunting horns reversed Or.” The item records a reblazon before the final LoAR registered the form quoted above.

The public device item does not list separate historical exemplars for the charges. Its documented resources are the submission artwork, the blazon history, and the final Laurel decision, which also carries the post-period caution about the winged-mermaid harp depiction.
